The Air Temperature Sensor (ATS) is a thermistor used on Samurai models with throttle body injection to measure the temperature of the air entering the intake manifold. The Intake Manifold Temperature (IMT) sensor, on the other hand, is used on 1993 California and all 1994 and later models with sequential multiport fuel injection to measure the temperature of the air entering the air cleaner housing. The PCM monitors these sensors and adjusts the fuel metering accordingly. Diagnostic trouble codes are set if there is a malfunction in the ATS or IMT sensor circuit. To check the sensor resistance, remove the sensor and immerse it in boiling water while measuring the resistance with an ohmmeter. If the resistance is incorrect, the sensor should be replaced. To replace the sensor, unplug the electrical connector and unscrew the ATS from the intake manifold or the IMT sensor from the air cleaner housing. Use a new gasket and coat the threads with Teflon tape before securely tightening the sensor. Reconnect the electrical connector and ensure the rubber grommet is in good condition before pushing the IMT sensor into the grommet and reconnecting the electrical connector.
