Remove the crankshaft pulley and vibration damper. Note how the seal is installed, as the new one must be positioned to the same depth and facing the same way. Carefully pry the oil seal out of the cover using a seal puller, ensuring not to scratch, gouge, or distort the area where the seal fits to prevent oil leaks. If replacing the seal with the timing chain cover removed, support the cover on two blocks of wood and drive the seal out from the backside with a hammer and punch, taking care to avoid damaging the area around the seal. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal, then install it in the cover with the lip facing inward and the words on the seal facing outward. Drive the seal into place using a seal driver or a large socket and hammer, ensuring it enters the bore squarely and is seated properly. Check the surface of the damper where the oil seal rides; if it is grooved, a press-on sleeve may be available to renew the sealing surface. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil and reinstall the vibration damper using a vibration damper installation tool to press it onto the crankshaft. Install the vibration damper-to-crankshaft bolt and tighten it to the specified torque, then install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. The remainder of the installation follows the reverse order of removal.

Drive the Crankshaft Seal into the bore with a seal driver or a large socket and hammer until it's completely seated. Select a socket that's the same outside diameter as the Crankshaft Seal and make sure the new Crankshaft Seal is pressed into place until it bottoms against the cover flange. Check the surface of the damper that the Crankshaft Seal rides on. If the surface has been grooved from long-time contact with the seal, a press-on sleeve may be available to renew the sealing surface. This sleeve is pressed into place with a hammer and a block of wood. Lubricate the seal lips with engine oil and reinstall the vibration damper. Use a vibration damper installation tool to press the damper onto the crankshaft. Install the vibration damper-to-crankshaft bolt and tighten it to the torque specifications. Install the crankshaft pulley and tighten the bolts to the torque specifications. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Wrap the electrician's tape around the tip of the screwdriver to avoid damage to the crankshaft. If the seal is being replaced with the timing chain cover removed, support the cover on top of two blocks of wood and drive the seal out from the rear with a hammer and punch. Apply clean engine oil or multi-purpose grease to the outer edge of the new seal, then install it in the cover with the lip (spring side) facing IN. Drive the seal into place with a large socket and a hammer (if a large socket isn't available, a piece of pipe will also work). Make sure the seal enters the bore squarely and stops when the front face is at the proper depth. Check the surface on the balancer hub that the crankshaft seal rides on. If the surface has been grooved from long-time contact with the seal, replace the crankshaft balancer. Lubricate the balancer hub with clean engine oil and reinstall the crankshaft balancer. The remainder of installation is the reverse of removal.

Position the new seal with the open end facing in.

The first step is to remove the transmission.

The transmission and driveplate must be removed, and the old seal can be pried out with a hooked tool or large screwdriver, taking care not to damage the crankshaft sealing surface.

Lubricate the balancer hub with clean engine oil and then reinstall the crankshaft balancer, completing the installation in reverse order of removal.

The rear seal housing should ideally be flush with the oil pan rail, but a tolerance of 0.000 to 0.020 inch is acceptable. Care should be taken not to distort the rear oil seal during alignment.

Position the new seal with the open end facing in.

Install the main bearing caps with bearings over the crankshaft and onto the cylinder block, ensuring the arrows point toward the front of the engine.

The seal should be placed over the end of the crankshaft and carefully tapped into place.

If the seal is being replaced with the timing chain cover removed, support the cover on top of two blocks of wood and drive the seal out from the rear with a hammer and punch.

Re-install the timing chain cover.

It is important to check that each of the five main bearing caps is marked for its location in the engine block; if not, small indentations should be made to match the markings for the connecting rods and caps.

The depth to which it is recessed into the housing bore.

Thoroughly with a shop towel, removing all traces of oil and dirt.

Place a drop of sealant on each end of these seal pieces and pack them into the upper groove to fill the gap made previously. Trim the remaining material perfectly flush with the block, being careful not to harm the bearing surface.
