Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and install the lug nuts to hold the disc in place against the hub flange; if the lug nuts don't contact the disc when screwed on all the way, install washers under them. For rear disc checks, release the parking brake. Remove the two caliper mounting bracket-to-steering knuckle or mounting bracket-to-axle flange bolts and take off the caliper and bracket as a unit without disconnecting the brake hose, suspending the caliper/bracket out of the way with wire. Visually inspect the disc surface for score marks and damage; light scratches and shallow grooves are normal, but deep scoring requires refinishing by an automotive machine shop. Check both sides of the disc, noting that severe wear may necessitate replacement. To check disc runout, secure the disc to the hub with lug nuts and washers if needed, then place a dial indicator about 1/2-inch from the outer edge of the disc, setting it to zero before turning the disc. The reading should not exceed the specified allowable runout limit; if it does, refinishing is required. If not resurfacing, remove glaze from the surface with emery cloth or sandpaper in a swirling motion. Ensure the disc is not machined to a thickness under the specified minimum, which can be checked with a micrometer. Remove the disc mounting screw and then the disc; if stuck, use a mallet or penetrating oil, avoiding contact with the friction surface. Clean the inner opening of the disc and the hub area, removing rust with fine emery paper before reinstalling. Position the disc over the threaded studs, align the hole for the mounting screw, install it, and tighten securely. Install the caliper mounting bracket and caliper, tightening the bolts to the specified torque values, and avoid cleaning the threaded holes or bolts. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, tighten the lug nuts to the torque, and depress the brake pedal a few times to bring the brake pads into contact with the disc, checking the operation of the brakes carefully before driving.
