When preparing to install new piston rings, you have to check the ring end gaps before making the assumption that the piston ring side clearance has been verified. While arranging the piston/connecting rod assemblies as well as the new ring sets should be done in a way that would permit matching of rings with its respective piston and cylinder for testing of end gap and engine assembly. To begin with, push number one top ring into first bore until it moves all way down before squaring it against cylinder walls with piston top. Take measure of the end gap by inserting feeler gauges between ends of the ring; then you pull them until one can find a gauge, which fits into gap with slight drag. In case of incorrect gaps, ensure rings are properly compatible before proceeding further. If gap is too small file off ring ends carefully using a fine file, but anything within 0.040 inch does not matter much whether it needs adjustment or not. Repeat this process for each ring in all cylinders while keeping rings, pistons, and cylinders matched. The next step involves fitting installed rings once their end-gaps have been checked and put right as necessary. Start with oil control ring which consists of three parts and insert them one at a time beginning from spacer/expander ensuring right positioning when there is anti-rotational tangue. Install side rails loosely on top groove so that they will be able to turn freely but without using any tool meant for installing piston rings. Then install number two (middle) ring such that mark faces upward while ensuring you are using a proper tool for installing piston rings. Lastly follow suit by installing number one (top) ring in same manner ensuring mark is orientate correctly being careful not to confuse between top and middle during this entire procedure. Repeat these steps for all remaining pistons and rings.

The piston must fit properly into its corresponding connecting rod and this is most efficiently done by special tools with help from an arbor press if available and by a professional. New piston rings should be of the same size as the piston that is to be employed for the rebuilt engine, and the process of setting them offers key to constructed engine's process. Before putting the piston rings, one must take some measurements on the ring end gap, which has to be done for each piston ring and for all the entire set of piston rings that must include a top ring, a second ring and a three-piece oil control ring. Screw one top ring into the bore of the cylinder so that it is perpendicular to the cylinder wall then, when another top ring has been fitted, use a feeler gauge to measure the gap between the two ends of the ring. If the gap is lacking, remove the ring and put a new top ring in its stead then check all top rings whereby by use of a fine file trued to size. As with the second rings and the oil control rings measure the end gap of each second In the same way. Roll a piston ring over the groove of the corresponding piston to feel any bind; if rings are distorted, replace them. If available use a piston ring expander or small lengths of tin to align the ring gap on the piston rings to the appropriate grooves when fitting the rings. Loosen and install the bottom oil ring spacer and its components and check that they float in the groove and do the same for all the pistons. The piston rings are to be correctly fitted and properly cleared in their respective grooves and the fitting should be checked using a blade feeler gauge and correction if any should be done.

Excessive end gap is not critical unless it exceeds 0.040 inches, so verify the correct rings for your engine.
