To remove and install the fuel pressure regulator for 4.5L and 4.9L engines, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the air cleaner upper housing assembly. Relieve the fuel system pressure, disconnect the fuel return line from the rear rail attachment, and remove the pressure regulator-to-rail bracket mounting screws. Take out the pressure regulator and fuel return line as an assembly from the fuel rail, then disconnect the fuel return line from the pressure regulator, covering all openings with masking tape to prevent dirt entry. For installation, lubricate new O-ring seals with petroleum base grease before assembling the pressure regulator to the fuel return line and rail assembly. Place a new O-ring seal on the pressure regulator and install the assembly to the fuel rail, securing it with retaining screws tightened to 9 fl. lbs. (12Nm). Connect the fuel return line at the rear of the rail assembly, using a backup wrench on the inlet fitting to prevent turning, then reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition switch ON and OFF to allow fuel pressure back into the system and check for leaks before installing the air cleaner assembly and performing an idle learn procedure. For the 4.6L early model, remove the fuel pump relay, relieve fuel system pressure, and remove the intake manifold top cover. Lift the fuel rail with injectors out of the intake manifold enough to remove the pressure regulator, disconnect the vacuum line, and install the new pressure regulator to the fuel rail before reinstalling the fuel rail and tightening the intake manifold top cover. In the late model 4.6L engine, avoid using compressed air or cleaning solvents on the fuel pressure regulator. Remove the intake manifold top cover, relieve fuel system pressure, and disconnect the vacuum hose from the regulator. Clean the retaining ring and remove it, catching any spilled fuel with a shop towel. Lift and twist the fuel pressure regulator from the fuel rail socket, covering it to prevent contamination, and clean the filter screen with gasoline and a soft brush. When installing, ensure all O-rings are properly placed, insert the regulator into the fuel rail socket, and install the retaining ring. Position the vacuum port correctly, reconnect the vacuum hose, and reconnect the negative battery cable. Turn the ignition switch ON for 2 seconds, OFF for 10 seconds, and then ON again, checking for fuel leaks before installing the intake manifold top cover.
