    Q:
How is access to the Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate typically achieved during maintenance on Pontiac G6? Posted by Customer
    A:
The clutch components are often reached by getting rid of the transaxle with the engine kept in the car. If the engine is being pulled for a major rebuild, the clutch should be inspected for wear and obviously, the clutch components are inexpensive enough that in the course of an engine or transaxle removal, any worn clutch parts should be replaced unless the clutch is new or in superb condition. To start with, you need to pull out the transaxle and then support the engine by any fixture or hoist from the upper side. In order to sustain the clutch disc while removal a clutch alignment tool can be purchased at most auto parts store. If you do not see any marks set your own marks on the flywheel and the pressure plate for you to be able to reinstall them in the right position. To do this, the pressure plate to flywheel bolts should be slackened in a diagonal or a star pattern so as to reduce the spring tension uniformly before the bolts, pressure plate and the clutch disc are removed. Vibration: While inspecting, examine the flywheel for crack and other deformation, in case the flywheel is found to be out-of-flat it should be machined flat and smooth. Inspect the shape and thickness of the lining on the clutch disc and, if there is any uncertainty as to its suitability, replace it. In additional to the clutch disc, the clutch release cylinder and bearing need to be replaced as well. Check the pressure plate for any signs of wear or damage and if possible change the pressure plate. Shiny machined surface of the flywheel and pressure plate should be clean of any oil or grease before the installation is done. Insert the alignment tool into the clutch disc and pressure plate and align it with the flywheel for correct installation. Tighten the pressure plate-to-flywheel bolts just enough so they can be grabbed between your fingers with a skill nut and aligning tool, but do not torque them yet; that will come in a cross pattern to avoid distortion and remove the alignment tool. Bolt the clutch release cylinder and then fit back the transaxle and all other parts which were removed earlier.
