    Q:
How to remove and install Clutch Disc and Pressure Plate on Chevrolet Nova? Posted by Customer
    A:
The access to the clutch components is normally through the removal of the transmission with the engine still in the car. Where the engine is being removed with a view to having it overhauled major, then the clutch too should be checked for signs of wear and any of the deteriorated parts substituted accordingly. Since the cost of the clutch components is relatively low compared to the time invested in getting to them, replacement is suggested when the engine/transmission has been pulled, unless new or in superb condition. Start with the demoting of the transmission and arising the engine preferably with an engine lift, the engine must be lifted with a jack, however, a piece of wood ought to be placed between the jack and the oil pan in other to spread the load. Some measure of care must be taken around the oil pump pickup as this is just beneath the oil pan and distortion of this subsystem will lead to lack of adequate supply of oil. Subsequently, take off the return spring and clutch release lever pushrod, and the clutch housing-to-engine bolts to pull out the housing; it may be necessary to pry off the alignment dowels. The clutch fork and release bearing can be left connected to the housing at this time. To prevent the clutch disc from falling out, place a clutch alignment tool through the clutch disc hub. Check for indexing marks on the flywheel or pressure plate and if they are missing, the mechanic should mark his or her own scribe marks that will be used in flywheel and pressure plate reassembly. Lose pressure plate-to-flywheel nuts in a diagonal fashion so that pressure from the clutch spring is relieved when the latter is taken off including the bolts and the pressure plate along with the clutch disc. While inspecting the flywheel look for crack and other analogous defects, if minor blemishes are present on the flywheel a machine shop can true up the surface. Check the bushing on pilot and the lining on the clutch disc, there should be at least 1/16 inches lining above the heads of the rivet and no signs of any damage. The clutch disc should also be replaced with a new one and the release bearing should also be replaced. Look at the pressure plate for signs of wear or damages and if needed a machine shop can pau minor grooves. It is necessary to clean the inner face of the flywheel and outer face of pressure plate by washed rags to remove any likely spilled oil or grease. Align the clutch disc and the pressure plate with the flywheel properly before installing them through the use of alignment tool. Loosen the pressure plate to flywheel bolts and then temporarily tighten the same with finger pressure and then align the clutch disc to its correct position and then torque tighten in a diagonal sequence pattern to the recommended torque. Oil the ID groove of the release bearing and contact surfaces; also in the clutch housing and fasten the bolts with the stipulated torque. Lastly, reinstall the transmission back, as well as every part which has been removed during the process of its disassembling, make sure to tighten every bolt and screw to meet all necessary requirements.
