This component is called as a 'module' in Chevy Sprints and as an 'igniter' in Geo Metros; there will not be any difference in the method of examination and replacement of this component. This can be carried out by first disconnecting the distributor cap and rotor together with the distributor. Secondly, remove the seal from the distributor base and one should replace it if it has cracks or is torn. Take out the screws of the module and uncover the distributor, after which the module should be extracted from it. Using one white and one red wire connect the pick-up coil and the module; unscrew both the wires from the distributor base to and disconnect it from the module then label the terminal to prevent the wires reversal when putting them back on. Attach an ohmmeter, a testers light and a 12V battery source to the module as directed with ohmmeter set in Rx 1. Connect the negative probe to the module terminal of the red wire and the other probe to the terminal of the white wire while exercising a lot of caution so as not to reverse the leads as this might damage the module circuit. If the test light bulb is on, then the involved module is okay but in case it is off it means that the module need replacement. Reinstallation takes place in the reverse manner, in order to avoid situation where red and white leads from the pick-up coil may be connected in the wrong poles.
