For the models right through 2005, the starting point is to move the shift lever into the drive position. Next, identify the retainer at the base of the shift knob and using small screw driver or trim tool remove the retainer. That is followed by simply lifting the shaft knob upwards to unlock it from the shaft, then placing the new shift knob until it locates well then the retainer goes back in. On models manufactured from 2006 and later models, twist the retainer ring at the top of the boot by hand in counterclockwise manner, which is the 12:00 to the 1:00 position. Tug the shift knob up fully to have it out from the car and sometimes one may have to use a lot of force while doing this though be careful not to cause harm on the car. Finally, screw the new shift knob into place until it bottoms, replace the shift boot, the rotate the shift boot retainer from the 1:00 position to the 12:00 position.

For models from 2005 and later, rotate the shift knob trim ring counterclockwise while pulling down on the ring. Once released, push the ring and boot down to expose the set screw. Remove the set screw and pull the knob up and off the shift lever. Installation is again the reverse of removal.
