Universal joints are mechanical couplings that connect two rotating components at different angles. They are composed of yokes connected by a crosspiece called a trunnion, with needle bearings in cups at each end of the trunnion for smooth torque transfer. Wear in the needle roller bearings can cause vibration, noise, and ultimately disintegration of the bearings. To check for wear, the driveshaft can be turned while holding the rear differential pinion flange or front half coupling, or a prybar can be used to test for looseness. If any wear is detected, the driveshaft should be replaced. On the other hand, the constant velocity joint on the forward end of the driveshaft is not serviceable and must be replaced if worn or damaged.

A press or large vise will be needed for this job and it may be easier to take the driveshaft to a local dealer service department, service station or machine shop for the replacement of a universal joint which is usually a reasonable cost. First you will want to remove the driveshaft. The snap-rings on the spider can be removed using a small pair of pliers, while a pair of needle-nose pliers can also be used for the same purpose. Place it up on a bench with a vice in support of the driveshaft. Take a pipe or a large socket of an inside diameter just a little larger than the outside diameter of the bearing caps and put it over one bearing cap and keep a socket of outside diameter just a little smaller than the opposite bearing cap against it. Either the vise or press will help to extrude the bearing cap to remove it but further turning of it will be done using the vise or set of large pliers and when it becomes really tight, the use of locking pliers can be used to remove the cap. Lightly press the other bearing cap up on this side and then transfer the sockets and press the other bearing cap out. After the servicing of the new universal joint bearings, it is appropriate to pack these with grease, which must be done accordantly with the provided recommendations that exist in the servicing kit. Centre the spider on the yoke and screw half of one bearing cap, and then begin to turn in the spider into the other bearing cap and screw half of that cap in. Rotate the spider so that it comes in line with the conical bearing and fit the bearing caps into place without deforming the dust collars. Install the snap rings and, if there is trouble in the installation, use a hammer to tap on the driveshaft yoke so that the yoke ears can be sprung and the snap-rings can fit into the groove easily. Typically if a snap-ring will not seat, one can use a brass hammer to ease tension in the yoke. Replace the grease fitting and pack the joint full of grease, but do not over do it because it will blow the grease seals out. Finally, install the driveshaft.
