New and rebuilts cylinder heads are available for most engines at dealers and automotive parts store, it is more practical and cost effective for the home mechanic to purchase a new one rather than pull the head to inspect and recondition as most of the tools needed for this process are specialized and most of the replacement parts might not be available in the market. Disassembly consists in the removal of the camshaft, both the intake and exhaust valves, and other components which may be necessary; it is necessary to label the various parts in order to ensure their reassembly in the correct position. Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, checking for leaks and proper operation.

Remove all built-up scale from the coolant passages and use a stiff wire brush to clear deposits from various holes.
