    Q:
Is it more practical and economical for home mechanics to purchase replacement cylinder heads rather than disassembling and reconditioning the original ones on Chevrolet Metro? Posted by Customer
    A:
New and rebuilts cylinder heads are available for most engines at dealers and automotive parts store, it is more practical and cost effective for the home mechanic to purchase a new one rather than pull the head to inspect and recondition as most of the tools needed for this process are specialized and most of the replacement parts might not be available in the market. Disassembly consists in the removal of the camshaft, both the intake and exhaust valves, and other components which may be necessary; it is necessary to label the various parts in order to ensure their reassembly in the correct position. Timing belt sprocket has to be removed and for the Sprint models; it will be Camshaft, rocker arms and shafts have to be removed While in the case of the Metro; Camshaft and Lifter are to be removed. Before removing it should be marked or otherwise identified and stored separately and valve keepers should be removed by compressing the springs using the spring compressor, and then releasing the compressor to ease out the retainer, spring as well as the spring seat where ever applicable. The valve can then be pulled out and the oil seal can be detached from the guide if the latter has to be deburred due to the valve binding. The above steps are done for all the valves, all parts of each valve are assembled together to facilitate reassembly when necessary. The valves and other components should be taken out and arranged systematically before cleaning the head; if a complete engine teardown is being done in the process of carrying out a thorough overhaul in this practice, it should be done before proceeding with the cleaning and inspection of the cylinder head.
