Q:
How do you remove the steering gear on Chevrolet Cruze? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the rack and pinion, start by disconnecting the cable from the negative battery terminal and positioning the wheels straight ahead. Inside the vehicle, mark the relationship of the U-joint to the rack and pinion input shaft and remove the pinch-bolt securing the U-joint. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and remove both front wheels. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and disconnect the electrical connectors from the rack and pinion. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and the rear transaxle mount. On 2015 and earlier models, support the rear of the subframe with a floor jack, remove the rear subframe bolts and reinforcement bolts, and lower it approximately 2 inches. On 2015 and earlier models, remove the stabilizer bar bracket bolts and lift and support the right side of the bar. Slide the rack and pinion carefully out through the right side wheel opening on 2015 and earlier models. On 2016 and later models, remove the subframe and then remove the stabilizer bar. Finally, remove and discard the rack and pinion mounting nuts and bolts and remove the rack and pinion. To install the rack and pinion, reverse the removal steps and make sure to replace the rack and pinion mounting bolts/nuts and the intermediate shaft pinch bolt with new ones. Reconnect the negative battery cable and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
