    Q:
How do you remove and install the steering gear on Chevrolet Camaro? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the rack and pinion, first disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. From inside the vehicle under the instrument panel, remove and discard the intermediate shaft pinch bolt and detach the shaft. Loosen the front wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle securely on jack stands, and remove both front wheels. Detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckles and remove the under-vehicle splash shield. For V6 models and 2012 and earlier non-supercharged V8 models, disconnect the ABS front wheel speed sensor on the driver's side, place a drain pan under the rack and pinion, and detach the power steering pressure and return lines, capping the ends to prevent fluid loss and contamination. Disconnect the driver's side front control arm from the steering knuckle and push the knuckle toward the rear of the vehicle. Remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts and slide the rack and pinion out through the driver's side wheel opening. For 2012 ZL1 models and all 2013 and later V8 models, disconnect the electrical connectors from the rack and pinion, attach an engine support fixture or hoist to the engine, and if equipped, disconnect the suspension position sensor link from the rear control arm. Disconnect the lower control arms from the steering knuckles, disconnect the engine mounts from the sub frame, and disconnect any wiring harnesses connected to the sub frame. Support the sub frame with floor jacks on each side, loosen the sub frame mounting fasteners approximately one inch, and lower the jack until the sub frame rests on the bolt heads, ensuring not to remove the bolts completely. Raise the engine slightly and remove the rack and pinion mounting bolts, discarding the two bushing bolts on the right end of the rack and pinion, as new ones must be obtained for reassembly. Be cautious not to raise the engine too high to avoid hitting the cowl with the engine cover. To install, reverse the removal steps, ensuring to align the match marks when connecting the rack and pinion input shaft to the intermediate shaft U-joint and install a new pinch bolt. Tighten all fasteners and lug nuts to the specified torque values, fill the power steering reservoir with the recommended fluid, bleed the power steering hydraulic system, and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
