    Q:
What type of fuel pumps are used on all carbureted engines, and how do they operate on Buick Century? Posted by Customer
    A:
Fuel pumps used on all carbureted engines are of the single-action mechanical type, with the rocker arm held in constant engagement with the eccentric on the camshaft by a spring. As the rocker arm moves upward, the fuel link pulls the diaphragm downward, enlarging the fuel chamber and drawing fuel from the tank. Fuel flows to the carburetor when the outlet line pressure is less than that maintained by the diaphragm spring. All fuel pumps on Century/Regal models are sealed units and must be replaced if defective. To remove the mechanical fuel pump, locate it, disconnect the fuel lines, and remove the mounting bolts, discarding the gasket. Clean all gasket material from the mating surfaces before installing a new gasket and the pump, then reconnect the fuel lines and check for leaks after starting the engine. Testing involves checking the suction side from the tank to the pump and the pressure side from the pump to the carburetor. A leak on the pressure side is indicated by dripping fuel, while a suction side leak may only be noticeable when the engine is off. Tighten any loose connections and inspect for bends or kinks. To check for clogs or pump defects, disconnect the pump at the carburetor, disable the ignition, and crank the engine to see if gasoline flows from the pipe. If fuel flows well, check the fuel pressure with a gauge while running the engine at approximately 450-1,000 rpm, ensuring the pressure remains within specified limits; if not, the pump should be replaced.

    Q:
How do you disconnect the cable from the negative battery terminal and remove the fuel pump on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable from the negative terminal post with the anti theft activate off on models with Delco LoeII audio system. Remove the fuel inlet and outlet lines using two wrenches: An open-end wrench on the fuel pump and a flare-nut wrench on the fuel line fitting, you do not want to mar the pump and connections with a conventional wrench. , then remove the fuel pump mounting bolts, the pump, and the gasket are next. For the V6 engines, the next step is to move the pushrod whereas, for the V8 engines, it is necessary to take out two bolts - it is necessary to take out the fuel pump adapter gasket alongside it - and then eliminate the pushrod. Remove all traces of gasket material and sealant from the fuel pump, adapter, and engine block, apply heavy duty grease on the pushrod to lock it up and then fit it in the engine block. On V8 models, screw the adapter plate with a new gasket and then place the pump with a new gasket on it and used gasket sealant on the screw threads. Last but not least, fasten the fuel lines, kick the starter, and, if there are no leaks, you are good to go.
