    Q:
How to remove and reinstall the flywheel/drive plate in a Chevrolet Tracker SOHC engine? Posted by Customer
    A:
Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands, then remove the transmission. If it's leaking, now would be a very good time to replace the front pump seal/O-ring (automatic transmission only). Remove the pressure plate and clutch disc (manual transmission equipped models). Now is a good time to check/replace the clutch components and pilot bearing. On drive plate-equipped models, mark the relationship between the drive plate and crankshaft to ensure correct alignment during reinstallation. Remove the bolts that secure the fly-wheel/drive plate to the crankshaft. If the crankshaft turns on flywheel-equipped models, immobilize it by reinstalling two of the pressure plate bolts halfway and holding a prybar between them. On drive plate-equipped models, wedge a screwdriver through the starter opening and into the ring gear teeth to immobilize the crankshaft. Remove the flywheel/drive plate from the crankshaft. Since the flywheel is fairly heavy, be sure to support it while removing the last bolt. Using brake system cleaner, clean the flywheel to remove grease and oil. Inspect the surface for cracks, rivet grooves, burned areas and score marks. Light scoring can be removed with emery cloth. Check for cracked and broken ring gear teeth. Lay the flywheel on a flat surface and use a straightedge to check for war page. Clean and inspect the mating surfaces of the flywheel/drive plate and the crankshaft. If the crankshaft rear seal is leaking, replace it before reinstalling the flywheel/drive plate. Position the flywheel/drive plate against the crankshaft. On flywheel-equipped models, be sure to align the hole in the flywheel with the alignment dowel in the crankshaft (An alignment dowel ensures the flywheel can only be installed one way. It must be aligned with the dowel hole in the flywheel.). On drive plate-equipped models, align the marks you made during removal. Before installing the bolts, apply thread locking compound to the threads. Tighten the bolts to the torque. Hold the crankshaft from turning as described previously. The remainder of installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.
