Relieve the fuel system pressure. Disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. On models equipped with the Delco Loc II audio system, be sure the lockout feature is turned off before performing any procedure which requires disconnecting the battery. Raise the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands. For 1987 and 1988 models, unscrew the fuel line-to-fuel filter fittings. To remove the fuel filter on these models, use two wrenches to unscrew the fuel line fittings from both ends of the filter. Use a back-up wrench to keep from twisting the line. For 1989 and later models, grasp the filter and one of the nylon quick-connect fittings and turn the fitting 1/4- tum in each direction to loosen any dirt in it. Repeat the procedure for the other fitting. Use compressed air or carburetor cleaner to blow or wash the dirt out of the fitting. Squeeze the tabs and disconnect the fuel lines from the filter. Remove the filter from the clip. Later model fuel filters are mounted with bolts. Snap the new filter securely into the clip or install the filter mounting bolts. Make sure the arrow on the filter points toward the engine. Reattach the fuel lines to the filter. On 1989 and later models, lubricate the fittings on the filter with clean engine oil before pushing the quick-connect fittings onto them. Make sure the tabs snap into place. Also, the fuel line or filter must be replaced with new ones if they are scratched or damaged during installation.
