At the specified intervals, the air filter and (if equipped) PCV filter should be replaced with new ones. A thorough program of preventative maintenance would also call for the filter to be inspected periodically between changes, especially if the vehicle is often driven in dusty conditions. The air filter is located inside the air cleaner housing which is mounted on the inner fender panel on the passenger side (Samurai) or on the drivers side (Sidekick/Tracker). Release the clips or remove the screws securing the top plate to the air cleaner body. On Samurai models, remove the air intake case to carburetor nut. Disconnect any electrical connections or vacuum lines and carefully mark them for reinstallation purposes. Lift the air filter out of the housing. If it's covered with dirt, it should be replaced. On Sidekick/X-90Nitara/Tracker models, the air filter housing is located in the engine compartment on the inner fender wall-remove the screws or detach the clips. Hold the cover up out of the way and lift out the filter element. Wipe the inside of the air cleaner housing with a clean rag. Place the old filter (if in good condition)or the new filter in the air cleaner housing. Reinstall the top plate and any hoses which were disconnected. Secure the clips or tighten the screws.
