At specified intervals, the air filter element should be replaced with a new one. The air filter is housed in a black plastic box mounted on the right side of the engine compartment, and on some models, a plastic gauge attached to the intake tube measures airflow through the filter, indicating when it should be changed. In dusty driving conditions, the gauge may suggest a filter change before the recommended mileage interval. For six-cylinder models, loosen the captive screws, pull the housing cover up, and lift the air filter element out, ensuring to wipe out the inside of the housing and the top of the windshield washer fluid reservoir with a clean rag. For V8 models, remove the radiator support diagonal brace and the radiator air intake baffle, then loosen the captive screws, pull the housing cover up, and lift the air filter element out, separating the MAF/IAT unit from the filter element and wiping out the housing and reservoir top. While the cover is off, take care not to drop anything into the housing. For six-cylinder models, push the new filter element onto the intake tube, ensuring it seats properly in the depression on top of the windshield washer fluid reservoir. For V8 models, install the MAF/IAT unit onto the air filter element, ensuring it seats properly. Installation is the reverse of removal, and after installing the air filter, push in on the top of the filter indicator to reset it.

Never drive without the air filter to avoid engine damage or fire. To remove the air filter on 2.2L and 2.4L engines (Cobalt/GS and ION models), loosen the inlet tube clamp, release the housing clips, and separate the cover to remove the filter. For 2.2L and 2.4L engines (HHR models), remove the engine cover, loosen the intake duct clamp, disconnect the MAF sensor, and remove the filter housing. Place it upside down, remove the fasteners, separate the halves, and remove the filter. For 2.0L turbo engines, unfasten the clips or screws, separate the cover, and remove the filter. Inspect the filter and replace if dirty. Clean the housing with compressed air. Install the new filter and reassemble the housing.
