To eliminate the distributor follow the wire from the coil to the component which is linked to the distributor, disconnect the primary lead from the coil and then pry off the electrical connector for the module or igniter. Locate a raised "1", on the distributor cap to signify the number one cylinder spark plug wire terminal, if not visible follow the wire from the number one spark plug to the cap. Pop off the distributor cap and rotate the engine till the rotor is aligned to the terminal number one spark plug. On the distributor base, mark the edge directly below the rotor tip and align this with the rotor; do the same to the distributor base and cylinder head. These are the popular 'lock washers' and require removal of a hold down bolt/s, pulling the distributor out horizontally, while not turning the crankshaft. For installation, if the crankshaft was turned, align the engine such that piston # 1 is at the Top Dead Centre (the highest position, that is, fully compressed). Place the distributor through the cylinder-head opening in the same way that you have removed it, meshes on the distributor coupling should engage the camshaft slot, and if you have to adjust the rotor do this and verify the first scratch you have made when aligning the marks. Some bolts are to be loosely tightened and then fix the distributor cap, re-establish the module or igniter electrical connector, spark plug wires, and join the cable to the negative terminal of the battery. Last, adjust the ignition timing and make sure that the distributor hold down bolts are tightened.

Loosen the generator assembly retaining screws to adjust the gap. Using a screwdriver, move the pick-up coil/generator assembly until the gap is within specification, then retighten the screws and recheck the gap.
