For Samurai models and 1987 through 1998 Sidekick/Tracker models, start by disconnecting the negative battery cable and removing the radio if present. Pull off the control knobs and face plate, using an L-hook for Samurai models to gently remove the face plate and access the light socket. Remove the mounting screws from the A/C Switch, pushing it back into the dash for Samurai models to lower it out. Slightly pull the control out, disconnecting cables at the operating ends for Tracker and Sidekick models if necessary. Mark the positions of the cable housings relative to the adjustment clips, detach the cables and wiring, and lift the assembly from the dash. To install, reverse the procedure, and for cable adjustment, remove the adjustment clips at the lever ends, reposition the cable housings, fasten the clips, and check for stiffness or binding. Finally, run the engine to ensure proper functioning of the heater and air conditioning if equipped. For 1999 and later Vitara/Tracker models, disconnect the negative battery cable and disable the airbag system. Remove the heater control lever knobs by prying up the locking tangs, then take out the instrument cluster trim panel, ashtray, center trim bezel, and glove box. Remove the mounting screws for the A/C Switch, then pull it out and unplug the electrical connectors for the blower motor switch, illumination bulb, and air conditioning system. Trace and disengage the three cables from their respective slider levers to the levers they actuate on the heater case, ensuring to label each cable to avoid misconnection during reassembly. Installation is the reverse of removal, and adjust the cables before reinstalling any dash trim panels. For cable adjustment, remove the lower steering column cover and glove box, then slide the control lever slider all the way to the right, disengage the fresh air cable from the clamp, push the fresh air control lever all the way up, and reclamp the cable, repeating the adjustment for the other two cables in a similar manner.
