To remove the wheel cylinder, start by loosening the wheel lug nuts and raising the rear of the vehicle on jackstands. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel, followed by the brake drum. Carefully remove the brake shoe upper return spring from both shoes and disengage them from the pistons. Clean any dirt and foreign material from around the wheel cylinder. Unscrew the brake line fitting at the rear of the backing plate, but do not pull the brake line away from the wheel cylinder. Remove the wheel cylinder mounting bolt and detach the wheel cylinder from the brake backing plate, plugging the brake line immediately to prevent fluid loss and contamination. To install the wheel cylinder, place it in position and install the bolt finger tight. Connect the brake line to the cylinder, ensuring it is not cross-threaded, and tighten the wheel cylinder mounting bolt to the appropriate torque specifications. Install the upper return spring on the shoes and position the brake shoes on the wheel cylinder pistons. Install the brake drum on the hub flange, followed by the wheel and lug nuts. Bleed the brake system and check the operation of the brakes before driving the vehicle. Finally, lower the vehicle to the ground and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque.
