    Q:
How do you detach and service a master cylinder on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Remove the cable from the negative terminal of the battery, making sure the Theft lock audio system lock out is off before disconnecting the battery. Disconnect the electrical connector from the fluid level sensor switch and remove brake line fittings; for this, put the rags under the line fittings in order to catch brake fluid, and caps or plastic bags should be ready for the ends of the lines. To prevent rounding of the flats, the brake mechanic should leak the fittings at the ends of the brake lines where they are connected to the Brake Master Cylinder using a flare-nut wrench. Disconnect the brake lines from the Brake Master Cylinder by pulling on the brake lines several inches from the Brake Master Cylinder and using pliers to pinch the brake line ends and keep them clean. Remove the two Brake Master Cylinder to vehicle bracket bolts holding the Brake Master Cylinder to the vehicle. Empty and dispose of the sediment left in the reservoir as well as the diaphragm and cover of the reservoir. Install the Brake Master Cylinder in a vise and cover the jaws with rags or pieces of wood, then remove the roll pins and split the reservoir assembly from the body of the Brake Master Cylinder, and discard the two O-rings. Lift the cap of the proportioner valve and, with gentle fingers and a pair of pliers, remove the O-rings, springs, and the proportioner valve pistons and seals without marring the piston stems or the bores. Specifications of the Brake Master Cylinder, the long directional control valve include: dismantling of the primary piston lock ring and the primary piston assembly and the secondary piston assembly may require inverting the Brake Master Cylinder and tapping it against a block of wood. Using brake system cleaner only and without using any petroleum base products, clean all the components and check the Brake Master Cylinder piston bore for any sign of corrosion or damage and replace the body of it if required. Drive new seals onto the secondary piston assembly with the cup lips outwards, then fit the spring retainer. They should then apply clean brake fluid on the cylinder bore of the Brake Master Cylinder, then fit the spring and the secondary piston assembly. Remove the primary piston assembly and attach the new seals to the piston after greasing them; bring the primary piston assembly into the bore and fit the lock ring. Check the proportioner valves for rust and if found replace them, then, using silicone grease, lubricate all the new O-rings and seals for installation in the proportioner valve pistons. Place the proportioner valve pistons and seals in the Brake Master Cylinder body and then the springs and new O-rings in their respective slots. Replace the caps of the proportioner valves and secure them; check the reservoir for crackling and distortion and replace if faulty. Put a little grease on the new O-rings for the reservoir, and gently push them into their respective channels, grease the reservoir joints, then fit the reservoir to the Brake Master Cylinder body. Replace the reservoir retaining pins, being very careful not to cause any further damage to the part, and check the reservoir diaphragm and cover for cracks and replace these if necessary. Bolt the reservoirs to the Brake Master Cylinder and bench bleed by opening one of the plugs while pushing the piston assembly into the bore to exhaust the air and replacing the right plug before returning the piston. Pump the piston about ten times for each outlet in order to expel all the air, using the likes of putting one's fingers over the hole while doing so. Replace the Brake Master Cylinder reservoirs with new ones, replace the diaphragm and cover assembly, and to reinstall the Brake Master Cylinder, turn the process around, fill the reservoir with recommended fluid, and bleed the brakes on each wheel.
