The catalytic converter is an additional equipment in emission control system through which pollutants in the exhaust gas stream are minimized; constructed with honeycomb mesh. The test equipment for a catalytic converter is very costly and even very sensitive; any signs of failure is worthy a visit to a dealer service department or an authorized emissions inspection center for physical diagnosis and repair. Whenever the vehicle is lifted up for other work involving the underbody assemblies, the converter should be inspected for outright signs of leakage or corrosion or again any form of damage and should be replaced if there is any. In some models the converter is bolted to the exhaust system and there are weld nuts which must be unwelded and the exhaust pipe assembly has to be removed and replaced, this often may require taking the vehicle to a dealer service department or to a muffler shop. For other models the car has to be lifted and supported on jack stands after which the converter has to be unbolted from the manifold and intermediate exhaust pipe to be removed. Installation, as it maybe understood, happens in the reverse order to the removal process.
