Q:
How do you remove the steering column? Posted by Customer
A:
To remove the steering column, start by parking the vehicle with the wheels straight ahead and disconnecting the battery's negative terminal. Disable the airbag system and then remove the steering wheel and steering column covers. Next, take out the clockspring/multi-function switch assembly and the knee bolster. Disconnect the electrical connector for the shift interlock solenoid from the ignition lock cylinder, as well as any other electrical connectors that may interfere with removal. Mark the relationship of the steering column shaft to the intermediate shaft and remove the pinch bolt. Finally, remove the steering column mounting fasteners and guide the column out from the instrument panel. To install the steering column, guide it back into position and connect the steering shaft with the intermediate shaft, aligning the marks. Install the mounting fasteners and tighten them to the proper torque specifications. Then, install the pinch bolt and tighten it to the correct torque specifications. The remainder of the installation process is the reverse of the removal steps.
