    Q:
How do you remove and install the steering column on Chevrolet Colorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before attempting to remove the steering column, the vehicle should be parked with its wheels straight and the cable disconnected from the negative terminal of the battery with the air bag system thus switched off. Second, pull the steering wheel out and turn the ignition key to the LOCK position so as the steering shaft cannot rotate because it can damage the airbag clockspring. Take out the knee bolster, and the reinforcement added to it, and if the car is fitted with a tilt column, move the tilt lever. Remove the steering wheel and the column covers and then separate the shift cable from the column; the connectors of the steering column harness and of the body harness as well as the connector of the shift lock solenoid shall also be disconnected. Take out the pinch bolt connecting the steering shaft to the upper intermediate shaft noting the position of the intermediate shaft to the steering column shaft. Then remove the bolts holding the steering column in place, lower the column and pulling it back with nobody connected, disconnect the intermediate shaft from the steering shaft and remove the column. For installation, its utility may involve such steps as the following: in the event of a new column, ensure the presence of a shipping lock pin and, if it is there, then release it. Adjust the steering column to the right position and lock on the intermediate shaft, bolt the mounting nuts on but do not tighten them. Fasten the coupler pinch bolt to the required torque followed by fastening of the column mounting nuts but remember to remove any old adhesive from the bolt threads before applying adhesives before installing. The rest of the installation is done in the reverse order that was done while removing them.
