    Q:
How do you properly remove and install a steering knuckle on Chevrolet Nova? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands placed under the frame while applying the parking brake, then remove the wheel. If equipped with disc brakes, remove the brake caliper and suspend it with a piece of wire, ensuring it does not hang by the brake hose. Remove the brake disc or brake drum and hub. Take off the splash shield from the steering knuckle; for models with drum brakes, unbolt the backing plate from the steering knuckle and hang the assembly with a piece of wire from the upper control arm without removing the brake shoes or disconnecting the brake line from the wheel cylinder. Separate the tie-rod end from the steering arm. If the steering knuckle needs replacement, pry off the dust seal from the spindle with a screwdriver and replace it if damaged. Position a floor jack under the lower control arm and raise it slightly to relieve spring pressure on the suspension stop, keeping the jack in this position throughout the procedure. Remove the cotter pins from the upper and lower balljoint studs and back off the nuts two turns each. Break the balljoints loose from the steering knuckle with a balljoint separator, taking care not to damage the balljoint seals. Remove the nuts from the balljoint studs, separate the control arms from the steering knuckle, and take the knuckle out of the vehicle. For installation, place the knuckle between the upper and lower control arms, insert the balljoint studs into the knuckle starting with the lower balljoint, install the nuts, and tighten them to the specified torque, using new cotter pins and aligning the slots in the nuts with the holes in the balljoint studs if necessary. Install the splash shield or brake backing plate, connect the tie-rod end to the steering arm, and tighten the nut to the specified torque with a new cotter pin. Install the brake disc or hub for drum brake models and adjust the wheel bearings. If equipped with disc brakes, install the brake caliper, tightening the mounting bolts to the specified torque. Finally, install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle to the ground, and tighten the nuts to the specified torque.
