The evaporative emissions control system has the purpose of pulling in fuel vapors from the gas tank and fuel system, then storing them in a charcoal canister. Periodically inspect the charcoal canister as explained in the maintenance schedule since it works like a tank for fuel vapors. On late model fuel-injected cars with an On-Board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR) system, the charcoal canister is positioned underneath the vehicle, on its right side, ahead of the fuel tank and route them to the intake manifold during normal engine operation. The most common symptom of a malfunctioning E.E.S. is that there will be strong smell of petrol coming from the engine compartment. For instance when one smells gasoline fumes, he should check for damage or wear on all hoses and charcoal canisters. The charcoal canister must be replaced at specified intervals with a new one. Remove hose connections, unbolt the bracket from either the firewall or under vehicle and disconnect hoses. Reverse procedure to install part if necessary.
