    Q:
How to remove and install the rear brake shoe lining assembly and parking brake cable bracket on Chevrolet Impala? Posted by Customer
    A:
The first thing you should do is to remove the wheel lug nuts, after that raise the rear of the vehicle and support it securely on jack stands. If you want to avoid the vehicle from rolling away then block the front wheels and release the parking brake. Afterwards, remove rear wheels. After removing a brake caliper and brake disc, we can proceed with loosening of parking brake cable at equalizer by holding cable end with small wrench while moving adjustment nut towards equalizer to loosen cable. After that detach brake cable and spring from actuator lever then separate cable from bracket. When removing a rear wheel hub and bearing mounting bolts, you need to keep in mind that during removal of an automotive wheel bearing assembly together with its backing plate, parking brake shoes as well as related components are removed as one unit. Then remove two bolts which hold parking brake cable bracket and actuator to backing plate in order to take off a cable bracket from the backing plate. Later turn adjuster wheel on actuator until it will be separated by adjusting it from shoe lining assembly. Take off minor actuator lever along with seal, following which remove complete actuator from backing plate. In this case, slide away shoe lining assembly off clip on backing plate for taking off shoe lining assembly through around wheel bearing & hub itself. The last sentence describes how brake assembly is removed while encircling hub and bearing uniting them both but using "removes" instead of "is removed." To install reverse of removal noting: Tighten torque for parking brake cable bracket mounting bolts; tightness must be controlled on torque for wheel bearing/hub assemblies mounting bolts, as well as caliper mounting/mounting bracket bolts; torque has also been mentioned in relation to tightening of lug nuts on wheels. Finally adjust parking brakes before pressing down or releasing pedal several times for confirming whether or not such is working properly.

    Q:
How to replace the rear brake shoes with rear disc brakes on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure applies only to 1997 and later models with rear disc brakes (except old). Begin by loosening the rear wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands before removing the wheels. Next, remove the brake caliper and the brake disc. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the bracket and the actuator lever, then unbolt the parking brake cable bracket. Proceed to remove the rear hub and bearing assembly, followed by the parking brake actuator and the parking brake shoe. When installing the new shoe and lining assembly, turn the adjuster screw until the shoe lining just drags on the braking surface inside the disc, then remove the disc and back off the adjuster screw until the shoe lining doesn't drag when the disc is installed and turned. Installation is otherwise the reverse of the removal procedure, ensuring to tighten the hub and bearing assembly bolts, the caliper mounting bolts, and the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque.

How to remove and install the rear brake shoe lining assembly and parking brake cable bracket on Chevrolet Monte Carlo? Posted by Customer

    Q:
What precautions should be taken when replacing brake shoes and springs on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Whenever the brake shoes are replaced, the return and hold-down springs should also be replaced due to the continuous heating and cooling cycle that causes the springs to lose tension over time, potentially allowing the shoes to drag on the drum and wear at a much faster rate than normal. When replacing the rear brake shoes, use only high-quality, nationally-recognized brand name parts. Begin by loosening the wheel lug nuts, raising the rear of the vehicle, and securely supporting it on jackstands while blocking the front wheels to prevent rolling. Release the parking brake and remove the wheel, ensuring that all four rear shoes are replaced simultaneously but working on one brake assembly at a time to avoid mixing parts. Remove the brake drum; if difficult, back off the parking brake cable, remove the access hole plug from the backing plate, and use a screwdriver to push the parking brake lever off its stop, allowing the shoes to retract slightly. Tap gently on the drum with a punch and rubber mallet to loosen it, avoiding excessive force. Clean the brake assembly with brake system cleaner, avoiding compressed air. For installation, follow the reverse of removal, lubricating components as necessary, and set the preliminary shoe adjustment by turning the star wheel on the adjuster to ensure the linings are 0.05 inch less than the inner diameter of the drum. Before reinstalling the drum, check for cracks, score marks, deep scratches, and hard spots, which may require taking the drum to an automotive machine shop for resurfacing. If resurfacing is not done, remove any glaze with medium-grit emery cloth and replace the drum if it cannot be cleaned before reaching the maximum service limit. Install the brake drum on the axle flange, mount the wheel, install the lug nuts, and lower the vehicle. Finally, apply and release the brake pedal 30 to 35 times using normal force, pausing for about one second between applications, and ensure both wheels turn freely after adjustment.
