- Q:How do you remove the steering gear boots? Posted by Customer
- A:To begin removing the rack and pinion boots, first loosen the wheel lug nuts then jack up the front of your vehicle using jackstands. Remove the wheels to be able to disconnect the tie-rod ends from the tie-rods. Then cut off boot clamps and throw them away. Remember where alignment marks on boots and rack and pinion are located. Remove boots. In order to install new boots, start by placing a new clamp on inner end of boot. Apply multi-purpose grease in groove on tie rod as well as mounting grooves in rack and pinion. Align mark with marker put on boot for ease of sliding it on housing for rack and pinion. Be sure that boot is not twisted while tightening a new inner clamp using crimping tool on clamps. Lastly, install outer clamps securely by tightening them properly.Installing these parts can finish with reinstalling tie rod ends.Recheck front end alignment finally making necessary adjustments if needed.Posted by GMPartsGiant Specialist
