    Q:
How do you properly replace the steering gear boots on Chevrolet Colorado? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the front of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the wheels. Remove the tie-rod ends from the tie-rods. Cut off the boot clamps and discard them using side cutters. Note the location of the alignment marks on the boots and rack and pinion, with one arrowhead mark on the rear side of each boot and two on the gear next to it, then remove the boots. Install a new clamp on the inner end of the boot and apply multi-purpose grease to the groove on the tie-rod where the outer end of the boot will ride, as well as the mounting grooves on the rack and pinion where the inner boot end will be clamped. Line up the marks on the boot and rack and pinion, then slide the new boot onto the rack and pinion housing, ensuring the boot isn't twisted. Tighten the new inner clamp with a clamp-crimping tool, then install and tighten the outer clamps. Finally, install the tie-rod ends and have the front end alignment checked and adjusted if necessary.
