    Q:
How do you perform an operating check and airtightness check on a brake booster on Chevrolet Corvette? Posted by Customer
    A:
For an operating check, decrease the brake pedal several times when the engine is turned-off, and find out that the reserve brake pedal distance does not change, then take the following steps which should show slight movement of the pedal, turn on the engine. In the case of the airtightness check, the engine should be switched on and turned off again after 1-2 minutes: the brake pedal should be pressed slowly severaltimes; if the end of the booster rises somewhat during the first pressing in but ascending progressively during the successive presses, then the checking of the booster is airtight. With the supply of energy to the engine on, push the brake pedal then stop the energy supply with the brake pedal depressed; if the pedal reserve travel does not change during the 30 second hold then the booster is airtight. It is not easy to disassemble the power unit with some home mechanic tools; if problems are encountered, the best solution should be having a new or a factory rebuilt unit. Some models through 2004 will require the removal of the windshield washer reservoir by disconnecting the electrical connector, washer hose, and mounting nuts. For the 2005 and later models, remove the coolant expansion tank with out detaching the hoses. Loosen the master cylinder from the power brake booster without severing the brake lines having in mind that we do not want to contort the hydraulic tubes. Remove the brake booster check valve and vacuum hose, knee bolster panel must also be removed. The Brake Pedal Position sensor remains as follows: 2004 and earlier models: Retain the Brake Pedal Position sensor. If fitted, unbolt and separate telescoping column motor mounting bracket; shift the motor to the right of the steering column. Pull the push rod clevis pin retaining clip from its grooved position to release the brake booster push rod from the pedal. Take out the brake booster nuts and pull the booster back from the firewall and out of the engine compartment; may need to move it from side to side, if factory-pressed-metal push-nuts are still screwed onto the booster studs. For the booster to be mounted it should be placed on the firewall before having the studs come underneath the instrument panel then adjust and tighten the booster mounting nuts. With the brake booster installed on the block place the master cylinder back onto the booster, fit the vacuum hose and check valve, connect the booster push rod, clevis pin and retaining clip to the brake pedal. The rest of the installation is the reverse of these procedures, and it is strongly recommended that the brakes should be checked to ensure that they are in good shape before using the car normally.
