A serpentine drivebelt is used only in the front of the engine and is vital for the proper functioning and its parts, due to its work and material made of it it is vulnerable to wearing out, and must be checked. The serpentine belt also turns the alternator and the air conditioning compressor, and while it should be examined on the regular basis, it does not necessarily have to be changed for over 100,000 of miles. To check, shut the engine and pull the drivebelt to review the whole length thereof for scratch and fully separation with the aid of turning the engine to move the belt off the pulleys for better check. Some signs which may be observed are fraying or glazing on the surface of the belt, which appears shiny and worn, pulleys should also be observed for nicks, cracks and distortions on the surface, corrosion. Some times small fissures are observable in the extremities of the belt ribs and it's not recommended that the belt be substituted where the fissures are not broad or profound. For replacement, unbolt the right front wheel lug nuts, lift the car using a jack and the remove the right front wheel. For the 2015 and earlier models, the front half of the inner fender splash shield will need to be detached to have access to the tensioner, while for the 2016 and the subsequent models, the right-side splash shield of the car needs to be removed. Observe the path of the drivebelt and then use a socket with a 3/8-inch drive breaker bar on the tensioner pulley center bolt in order to loosen tension on the drivebelt, after which the tensioner is locked in position to allow removal of the belt. For 1.4L engines, before removing the right-side engine mount, the engine must be supported either from below or above. For 2016 and later models, turn a ratchet or a breaker bar to unlock tension and take out the belt. In case one wants to replace the drivebelt, position it over the crankshaft, alternator, water pump, and the ac compressor pulley to make sure that is in proper contact with all the grooves of the pulleys before releasing the tensioner. After installation torque the lug nuts, reconnect the fenderwell splash shield and lower the vehicle. For tensioner removal, loosen the drivebelt, move the tensioner to the position where it releases pressure, and then unscrew the tensioner bolts: On 1.4L engines till 2015 and 1.8L engines, the tensioner has two bolts while on 1.4L and 1.8L engines from 2016 the tensioner has one bolt. Installation is the reverse order while making sure that the tensioner bolts have been tightened to the recommended torque.
