This procedure includes removal and installation of the camshaft on 16-valve engines. First, remove the negative battery cable and radiator. Set the number one piston at top dead center and remove the camshaft cover. Loosen lock nuts and back off valve adjustment screws. Remove timing belt and camshaft sprocket. For eight valve engines, remove ten rocker arm shaft retaining screws and number them for reassembly. Push the rear of one rocker arm shaft until it protrudes enough at the front to grip, then slowly pull each rocker arm shaft out the front of the engine. For sixteen valve engines, remove radiator grille, hood latch, front upper member, distributor housing. Remove camshaft cover, timing belt, and camshaft sprocket. Reverse this order to loosen camshaft bearing cap bolts then remove them and lift off the camshafts bearing caps along with its cams from above cylinder head. Take off timing belt inner cover and unscrew rocker arm shaft plug. Mark intake and exhaust rocker arms; take intake rocker arms out. Pull out bolted-on rocker arm shafts from cylinder head slowly through front of engine and lift exhaust valve rocker arms out with wave washers still attached to them from head. Thoroughly clean parts; measure inside diameter of each rocker arm comparing it to outside diameter of a shaft visually inspecting rockers arms as well as springs; replace any parts not within tolerance or are damaged in any way. Prior to installation lubricate both shafts as well as all surfaces on which they will move including lobes on a camshaft too;. Slowly push a rocker arm shaft into the cylinder head while guiding it into the rocker arms and springs or washers; install intake rocker arms followed by mounting camshafts caps; use anaerobic sealant to apply thin layer on rear bearing cap when installing it; tighten camshaft bearing cap bolts using proper sequence fixing these components in place with retaining screws; adjust valves, then reinstall the other components in the reverse order of removal.
