    Q:
How to remove and replace a control arm on a Saturn LS and LS1? Posted by Customer
    A:
Loosen the wheel lug nuts on the side to be disassembled. Apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle, support it securely on jackstands and remove the wheel. Remove the pinch bolt securing the balljoint to the control arm. Use a prybar to disconnect the control arm balljoint from the steering knuckle. To detach the control arm balljoint from the steering knuckle, remove the nut and bolt, then pry the balljoint out of the steering knuckle with a large prybar or screwdriver. Remove the bolts that attach the control arm to the subframe. Remove the control arm. Check the control arm for distortion and the bushings for wear, replacing parts as necessary. Do not attempt to straighten a bent control arm. If the bushings are cracked or show signs of wear, take the control arm to an automotive machine shop and have the bushings replaced. Installation is the reverse of removal, tighten all of the fasteners to the specific torque values. Before tightening the control arm pivot bolls, raise the outer end of the control arm with a floor jack to simulate normal ride height. Install the wheel and lug nuts, lower the vehicle and tighten the lug nuts to the specific torque. It's a good idea to have the front wheel alignment checked and, if necessary, adjusted after this job has been performed.

    Q:
How do you replace the lower lateral control arm for the 2000 Saturn LS? Posted by Customer
    A:
To replace the lower lateral control arm, remove the lower control arm-to-trailing arm mounting bolt and nut, along with the fuel tank heat shield and fuel tank. Remove the pivot bolt from the inner end of the arm, noting that the rear stabilizer bar bushings may need removal for access. Inspect the control arm pivot bushing for wear and replace if needed. Reinstall the control arm following the reverse order of removal, tightening fasteners to the specified torque.

    Q:
How do you remove the trailing arm for the 2000 Saturn LS1? Posted by Customer
    A:
To remove the trailing arm, first remove the brake shoe or disc brake assembly, ABS wheel speed sensor, and associated brackets. Unbolt the brake hose and brake line brackets, as well as the parking brake cable brackets. Remove the hub and bearing assembly, and suspend the brake backing plate out of the way. Remove the shock absorber/coil spring-to-trailing arm mounting bolt and the rear stabilizer bar link-to-trailing arm bolt. Support the trailing arm with a jack, then remove the bolts securing the upper and lower lateral control arms to the trailing arm. Mark the relationship of the trailing arm mounting bracket in relation to the vehicle chassis, then remove the bracket bolts and lower the trailing arm from the vehicle. Inspect the trailing arm pivot bushing for wear and replace if necessary. During installation, align the mounting bracket with match marks on the vehicle chassis, install the mounting bolts, and tighten them. Finally, tighten all other fasteners to their specified torque, and check and adjust the rear wheel alignment if needed.
