The removal procedure for trunk lid or liftgate for Cobalt/GS models entails having an assistant hold the trunk lid open, marking around the trunk hinge to keep it aligned, disconnecting electrical connections and ground wires, releasing the clip holding the Trunk Lid Lift Support in place, removing the hinge-to-trunk lid nuts and lifting off the entire assembly. Installation is the opposite of removal. The HHR model has a different procedure which includes removing upper trim panel and pull-down handle, disconnecting rear wiper washer hose and electrical connectors, releasing clips from Trunk Lid Lift Supports, removing hinge-to-liftgate bolts and finally pulling out liftgate. Installation process is total reverse of removal. For ION models, there is a need to have someone hold up the trunk lid while open; unplug all electrical connection wires and ground wires; remove the rubber conduit; remove screws holding it at its hinges to detach it; and finally lift the door off. The installation is done in reverse order of these steps outlined above. For adjusting purpose check hinge play; loosen hinge-to-body bolts to adjust trunk lid/liftgate-to-body alignment; adjust latch striker too far towards front or rear of the vehicle by adjusting door-closed position.
