Four different driveshaft assemblies are used on the vehicles covered, with Samurai models utilizing three drive shafts while Sidekick/X-90/Vitara and Tracker models use only two, or one on 2WD models. The Samurai employs a short driveshaft to transfer power from the transmission to the transfer case, while all models feature a front driveshaft for 4WD and a rear driveshaft that transmits power from the transfer case to the front and rear axles. The transfer case on Sidekick/X-90/Vitara and Tracker models is mounted to the rear of the transmission, eliminating the need for a short driveshaft. Later model long wheelbase 2WD vehicles use a two-piece driveshaft with a center bearing support. All universal joints are solid type and can be replaced separately from the driveshaft. Driveshafts are finely balanced during production, and if removed or disassembled, they must be reassembled and reinstalled in their original positions to prevent excessive vibration. The rear axle on all models, and the front axle on Samurai models, is of the semi-floating type, aligned with the body by the suspension. The differential, located at the center of the axle, transfers the turning force of the driveshaft to the axleshafts, while the rear wheel bearing supports the outer ends of the axle. The inner ends of the axles are splined to fit into the differential gears, and the outer ends of the front axles are supported by bearings in the spindles. Due to the complexity and critical nature of differential adjustments, along with the special equipment required, it is advisable for any disassembly of the differential to be performed by a dealer service department or qualified repair facility.

If the axle bearing needs replacement, take the assembly to a dealer service department or repair shop for the old bearing to be removed and a new one pressed on, also replacing the axleshaft oil seal if a new bearing is installed.

Drain the differential lubricant, then remove the locking hub.
