Loosen the wheel lug nuts, raise the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands. Remove the wheel and install two lug nuts to hold the disc in place. Remove the brake caliper without disconnecting the brake hose, and suspend it out of the way with a piece of wire. Visually inspect the disc surface for score marks and other damage; light scratches and shallow grooves are normal, but deep score marks over 0.015-inch (0.38 mm) require disc removal and refinishing by an automotive machine shop. Check both sides of the disc, especially if pulsating has been noticed during brake application, as this may indicate disc runout. Ensure the wheel bearings are properly adjusted. To check disc runout, place a dial indicator about 1/2-inch from the outer edge of the disc, set it to zero, and turn the disc; the reading should not exceed the specified allowable runout limit. If it does, the disc should be refinished. Professionals recommend resurfacing brake discs regardless of the dial indicator reading to eliminate brake pedal pulsations. If not resurfacing, deglaze the discs with sandpaper or emery cloth using a swirling motion for a non-directional finish. The disc must not be machined to a thickness less than the minimum thickness cast into the inside of the disc, which can be checked with a micrometer. Remove the two caliper carrier-to-steering knuckle bolts and the carrier. Remove the two lug nuts holding the disc in place and take the disc off the hub; if stuck, thread two bolts into the holes provided and alternate turning them until the disc is free. Place the disc in position over the threaded studs, install the caliper carrier, and tighten the bolts to the specified torque. Install the caliper and brake pad assembly over the disc, position it on the steering knuckle, and tighten the caliper bolts to the specified torque. Install the wheel, lower the vehicle to the ground, and depress the brake pedal a few times to bring the brake pads into contact with the disc. Bleeding of the system is not necessary unless the brake hose was disconnected from the caliper. Check the operation of the brakes carefully before placing the vehicle into normal service.
