    How do you properly install new piston rings and check their end gaps on Pontiac Firebird? Posted by Customer

    Whenever fitting new piston rings there should be a check on the ring end gaps to ensure the piston ring side clearance is appropriate. Piston/connecting rod assemblies and new ring sets should be laid out to match a piston and cylinder for end gap measurement and subsequently for engine assembly. Place or align the top ring with the first cylinder with the help of the piston, then check the contact of the ring with the cylinder wall and the end clearance to the standard feeler gauge. If the gap is incorrect verify it that right rings is being used. If the gap is too small then more carefully file the ring ends from the outside in, the file should mounted in vise with soft jaws. End gap is not a problem so long as in does not get too large, and in this case exceeds 0.030 to 0.035 inches so double check rings for proper mating. Perform this for the first cylinder and then for the remaining cylinders always maintaining rings, pistons compatibility with cylinders. After the end gaps have been verified and adjusted, the rings should be fitted to the pistons; the oil control ring is made up of three parts. Snap the spacer expander into the groove and then put the upper side rail with fingers to avoid bending it. This has to be installed in a similar manner to the top side rail and one has to ensure that the both the side rails can rotate easily along this groove. After that, another ring - middle one - shall be depositioned in place with the identification mark toward the top of a piston using the installation tool without compressing the ring to far as for its expansion. Last of all fit the top ring in the same manner in which the marks came, and do the same for the other pistons and rings but being wary not to mix up the top with the middle or the middle with top rings.
