About every six months, with the vehicle raised and supported securely on jackstands, inspect the rubber hoses connecting the steel brake lines to the front and rear brake assemblies for cracks, chafing, leaks, blisters, and other damage, as these are crucial parts of the brake system. Use a light and mirror for a thorough check, and replace any hose showing signs of wear. To replace the front and rear brake hoses, disconnect the brake line from the hose fitting on the frame bracket, taking care not to bend the bracket or line, and use a flare-nut wrench on Samurai models to avoid rounding off the nut. Remove the U-clip from the female fitting at the frame bracket and detach the hose. For a front brake hose, remove the union bolt at the caliper end and separate the hose, ensuring to replace the two copper sealing washers during installation. For the rear brake hose, disconnect it at the axle end similarly. When installing a front hose, pass the caliper fitting end through the bracket, connect it to the caliper with the union bolt and copper washers, ensuring the locating lug is engaged, and tighten to the specified torque. Attach the female fitting of the hose to the frame bracket without twisting the hose, install the U-clip, and connect the brake line to the hose fitting. Ensure there are no kinks in the hose and that it does not contact any suspension parts by turning the wheels to the extreme left and right; if contact occurs, correct the installation. For metal brake lines, use the correct steel parts and avoid copper tubing. Prefabricated brake lines with flared ends and installed fittings are available at auto parts stores. Securely support the new line in brackets, ensuring clearance from moving or hot components. After installation, check the master cylinder fluid level, add fluid as necessary, bleed the brake system, and test the brakes carefully before driving in traffic.
