    Q:
Should calipers be replaced rather than overhauled if fluid leakage is indicated on Chevrolet Cruze? Posted by Customer
    A:
If replacement is indicated, usually due to fluid leakage, it is recommended that the calipers be replaced rather than overhauled. New and factory rebuilt units are available on an exchange basis, making this job quite easy. Always replace the calipers in pairs; never replace just one. For the front, begin by loosening the lug nuts on the front wheels without removing them, then raise the front of the vehicle and support it securely on jackstands before removing the front wheels. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and plug it to keep contaminants out of the brake system and minimize brake fluid loss, unless only removing the caliper for access to other components. Remove the caliper guide pin bolts and detach the caliper from its mounting bracket. To install, reverse the removal procedure, replacing the copper sealing washers on either side of the brake line fitting with new ones, and tighten the caliper guide pin bolts and the brake line banjo fitting bolt to the specified torque. Bleed the brake system, install the wheels and lug nuts, and lower the vehicle, tightening the wheel lug nuts to the specified torque. For the rear, loosen the lug nuts on the rear wheels without removing them, raise the rear of the vehicle, and support it securely on jackstands before removing the rear wheels. Disconnect the parking brake cable end from the lever on the caliper, depress the cable retaining tab, and slide the cable out of the bracket on the caliper. Disconnect the brake line from the caliper and plug it to keep contaminants out of the brake system and minimize brake fluid loss. Remove the caliper guide pin bolt and dampener bolt, then detach the caliper from its mounting bracket. Inspect the parking brake side of the caliper for any signs of brake fluid seepage around the shaft for the parking brake lever, as the seal is not serviceable and any leakage requires caliper replacement. For installation, ensure the notches in the pistons are centered in the caliper opening as viewed from above, then reverse the removal procedure, tightening the caliper guide pin bolts and the brake line banjo fitting bolt to the specified torque. Bleed the brake system, install the wheels and lug nuts, lower the vehicle, and tighten the lug nuts to the specified torque, adjusting the parking brake as necessary.
