The early models of 1998 and before use recirculating ball-type steering while the later models from 1999 and after use rack-and-pinion type steering. To remove the recirculating ball-type steering, one has to lift the front part of the vehicle and park it on some stands engaging the parking breaks. Place a drain pan beneath the car's Rack And Pinion, detach the hoses and wrap the ends with caps to avoid leakage. Locate the position of the lower intermediate shaft universal joint in relation to the Rack And Pinion input shaft and take out the pinch bolt of the lower intermediate shaft. Stand back from the Samurai models where the Pitman arm joins to the shaft, then, take off the nut and washer, while on the Sidekick and Tracker models, sever the center link from the Pitman arm. Take off the Pitman arm using a two-jaw puller and during this process support the Rack And Pinion, and after removal of the mounting bolts immerse the unit allowing the separation of the intermediate shaft from the Rack And Pinion input shaft. To install the Rack And Pinion, simply lift the Rack And Pinion into place, connect the intermediate shaft, fasten the mounting bolts and bring the Pitman arm on the side of Samurai models or the center link of Sidekick and Tracker models. Last but not the least connect the power steering hoses, then fill the reservoir, lower the car and allow bleeding from the steering system. For models with rack-and-pinion steering, turn the frontend lug nuts to slacken them, jack up the car and take the front wheels off. Identical the position of the intermediate shaft coupler to the Rack And Pinion input shaft and take off the pinch bolt. Disconnect the tie-rod ends from the steering arms, place the drain pan under the Rack And Pinion, and unbolt the pressure and return hoses of the power steering and plug the ends to avoid loss of the steering fluid. Remove the four Philips screws, remove the Rack And Pinion unit and finally drop it. The reverse of removal is applied for installation where it is necessary tighten all the fasteners to the correct torque values and to connect the power steering lines securely, to fill the power steering reservoir, to set the vehicle, to tighten the lugs nuts and to bleed the power steering system checking the wheel alignment when is required.
