Vehicles manufactured from 1973 onwards are equipped with energy absorbing devices between the bumpers and vehicle frame to comply with Federal Safety Standards under impact load. These devices contain hydraulic fluid and gas under high pressure, and should not be tampered with or exposed to heat. In case of accident damage or prior to disposal, gas pressure can be relieved by drilling a hole through the caution label on the energy absorber body, with eye protection recommended during this operation. For front bumpers on 1972 and earlier models, disconnect the electrical wiring, remove the bolts retaining the brackets and braces, and then take off the bumper assembly. Disconnect lamp assemblies and any necessary brackets and braces, with installation reversing the removal steps. For 1973 and later models, remove eight nuts attaching the bumper to the energy absorber, then detach the bumper reinforcement assembly as needed, and finally remove the energy absorber by unbolting it from the frame bracket. Installation follows the reverse order. For rear bumpers on 1972 and earlier models, disconnect the license plate wiring, remove the bolts fastening the bumper brackets to the frame side rails, and lift away the bumper after removing the fiber optic conductor. The license plate and associated components can be unbolted as necessary, with installation reversing the removal process. The procedure for rear bumpers on 1973 and later models is similar to that for the front bumpers.
