    Q:
What steps should be taken before beginning the procedure for rebuilding or replacing a master cylinder on Chevrolet Astro? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before starting this procedure, phone parts stores and dealer service departments related to the purchase of a rebuild kit, or a new master cylinder, for it may be necessary to purchase parts essential for the decision to rebuild or replace the cylinder. If rebuilding, one should inspect the bore prior to obtaining the spare parts. First detach the ground terminal from the battery and position the wire where it won't touch the terminal by itself. If the model has the anti-theft audio system, switch it off before disconnecting the battery. Subsequently, remove the push rod from the upper end of the clutch pedal as well as the hydraulic line connecting to the clutch master piston and this has to be accomplished using the flare nut wrench so that the fitting does not gets rounded off and there should be rags ready to collect the lost fluid. You will have to take out two bolts connecting the master cylinder to the engine firewall and be gentle not to spill any of the fluid. Remove all the fluids with the master cylinder, remove the reservoir cap and discard the dust cover, snap-ring, a retaining washer and the pushrod. Place the end of the master cylinder on a wooden surface and strike it hard so that the plunger assembly is ejected out and then pull the spring away from the plunger and also removes the spring support, seal and shim from the pushrod. When removing the seals from the plunger, make sure to demould the position of the seal lips with respect to the plunger. If the bore is not smooth that is if it has deep scratches or imperfections, then replace the master cylinder. If rebuilding, use the new parts that come with the rebuild kit and if there are any additional instruction then follow them. Put on the plunger seal to the plunger, join the shim, the spring support, and the spring, refill the bore and the seals with fresh brake fluid, and take the plunger assembly into the bore gently. Place the retaining washer on the pushrod, place the spring in the hole, and new snap-ring. Smear rubber grease in the inner part of the dust cover before fixing it at the master cylinder. In installation, position the master cylinder to the firewall and start tightening the two mounting nuts slightly; connect the hydraulic line and double up on the right threading and the two nuts should be tightened to the correct torque as required. On the inside of the vehicle attach the pushrod to the clutch pedal, fill the clutch master cylinder reservoir with brake fluid fitting DOT 3 standards, then perform a clutch system bleed.
