To perform an operating check, depress the pedal and start the engine; if the pedal goes down slightly, operation is normal. Depress the brake pedal several times with the engine running to ensure there is no change in the pedal reserve distance. For an airtightness check, start the engine and turn it off after one or two minutes, then depress the brake pedal several times slowly; if the pedal goes down farther the first time but gradually rises after the second or third depression, the booster is airtight. While the engine is running, depress the brake pedal and then stop the engine with the pedal still depressed; if there is no change in the pedal reserve travel after holding the pedal for 30 seconds, the booster is airtight. To remove the booster, disable the airbag system and disconnect the cable from the negative terminal of the battery. Detach the vacuum hose from the booster by pulling the fitting straight out of the grommet. Remove the master cylinder without detaching the brake lines, being careful not to bend or kink them, and position it aside. Remove the left side under-dash panel, then remove the pushrod retaining clip and slip the brake light switch and pushrod off the pin. Unscrew the four nuts holding the brake booster to the firewall, then slide the booster straight out until the studs clear the holes and pull it and the gasket from the engine compartment. For installation, reverse the removal process, ensuring to use a new gasket and tighten the booster and master cylinder mounting nuts to the specified torque values.
