The drivebelt(s) are located in the front of the engine and are considered essential for the smooth running of the engine through drive belt accessories including the alternator, power steering pump, water pump, air conditioning compressor and in the LS9 models, the supercharger. Different models are available depending on the number of belts required which range from a single belt to a multiple belt arrangement and since the belts are made of materials that are likely to wear out with use, they should normally be checked from time to time. The tension of the belt is maintained and controlled by the tensioner and does not need any tension settings while the wear can be seen using the wear indicator on the body of the tensioner. To examine the belt efficiently, the engine has to be off, and the belt should be checked for cracks, fray, glazing and the pulley should also be inspected for sign of damage. Running cracks are permissible on ribbed belts to a certain extent and are normally allowed unless they are severe or incised. For replacement, the air intake duct may be required to be taken off and the tensioner should be turned clockwise to counter clockwise to release tension in order to pull of the old belts off. With newer belts the correct positioning has to be established on the required pulleys and should be seated well to allow for the tensioner to be released. Tensioners can also be replaced by using a nuts and bolts approach where the securing bolts are removed and then reinstalled in the reverse manner but the bolts have to be tightened to the right torque value.
