    Q:
How to install a crankshaft balancer in V8 engine on Chevrolet Impala? Posted by Customer
    A:
This procedure can only be done if one has a balancer installation tool which is sold by only a select number of tool makers and a new harmonic balancer bolt. First of all the cable has to be removed from the negative terminal on the battery then lift up the front of the vehicle and put it securely on jackstands and also apply the parking brake. You need to have the drive-belt, the upper part of the air filter housing and the top engine mounting strut out of the way. Then remove the inner plastic fender from the right side of the car and then to take off the transmission cooler tubes, pull back the plastic covers and use your fingers to remove the small wire retainers hooked on each of the fittings. Unbolt the stabilizer bar links at their lower ends, and peel up the plastic cover around the steering shaft, then, there is the requirement of removing the pinch bolt so that the steering shaft can be released by pushing it off the lower shaft. Take out the lower air dam together with its support and the support of the radiator to the lower frame of the engine. Place an engine support stand in a position in which it will lay across the top of the engine and will be bolted on top of the engine to bear the weight of the engine and tighten to lift the engine off its stands. Lift the bike and remove the subframe and the right front wheel, and then gently ease down the engine so as to get enough space to remove the harmonic balancer or pulley. Unbolt the balancer using an impact gun, or by hand but when doing this ensure the crankshaft does not rotate, and then use a three-jaw puller to remove the balancer off the crankshaft while seeing to it that a spacer has been inserted on the crankshaft nose so that it is not damaged in the process. Seat the new harmonic pulley/balancer onto the crankshaft as far as it will go and then using the harmonic pulley/balancer holder, press it fully onto the crankshaft. Re-engage the old harmonic balancer bolt and tighten it good engaging a Rev gauge to measure the crank snout to balancer hub distance. In the case that the measurement is wrong, the balancer on should be pressed until it is the right measure. Last, fit a new harmonic balancer bolt and then apply the second turn to a specific torque with a specific angle of rotation and then continue the assembly process in the reverse manner of the entire removal process.
