Raise and safely support the vehicle securely. Remove the oil pan following the procedures outlined earlier. Remove the two screws and one nut securing the ump to the engine. Lift the car and drain the oil, then loosen and take out the oil pan and the bolt which connects the pump to the rear main bearing cap, if there is one; in some models, you may have to take out the oil pan baffle before loosening the bolt because it is also used to support the pump. Screw down the pump and with it remove the pump driveshaft, examine two oil pump locator pins that protrude about 0.3cm from the bearing cap and replace them if necessary. Before installing the pump again, it is advised that the oil pump driveshaft retainer is changed, to ensure that the driveshaft sits correctly on the pump shaft. Locate this pump at the engine, ensuring that the slot on the upper end of the driveshaft fits into the tang on the lower end of the distributor shaft because the distributor drives the oil pump and therefore proper fitting of two is critical. Screw in the oil pump mounting bolt to the recommended torque and fit the oil pan. Begin the engine and check that the oil pressure light off or the oil pressure gage shows correct pressure.

Remove the oil pan and the bolts securing the oil pump assembly to the rear main bearing cap, then take out the oil pump along with its pickup tube and screen as a single unit from the engine block. For installation, position the pump assembly and align the slot on the top end of the extension shaft with the drive tang on the lower end of the distributor, ensuring proper mating between these components since the distributor drives the oil pump. Secure the assembly with bolts and torque-tighten them to specifications. Ensure the oil pump screen is parallel with the oil pan rails for proper fitting into the oil pan, then install the oil pan, paying close attention to the oil pressure gauge or warning light during the initial engine start-up period.

In most cases, it is more practical and economical to replace a faulty oil pump with a new or rebuilt unit, but if an overhaul is chosen, check on the availability of internal parts before starting. Begin by removing the pump cover retaining screws and the cover itself, marking the gear teeth for reassembly. Next, take out the idler gear, drive gear, and shaft from the body, followed by the pressure regulator valve retaining pin, the regulator valve, and related components. If needed, extract the pick-up screen and pipe assembly from the pump body. Clean all parts in solvent and dry them thoroughly, inspecting the body for cracks, wear, or other damage, as well as the gears. Check the drive gear shaft for looseness in the pump body and examine the inside of the pump cover for wear that could lead to oil leakage. Inspect the pick-up screen and pipe assembly for any damage. Apply gasket sealant to the end of the pipe and carefully tap it into the pump body, ensuring no damage occurs; if the original press-fit cannot be achieved, a rear assembly must be used to prevent air leaks and loss of pressure. Install the pressure regulator valve and related parts, followed by the drive gear and shaft in the pump body, then the idler gear with the smooth side facing the pump cover opening, lubricating the parts with engine oil. Finally, install the cover and torque tighten the screws, then turn the driveshaft to ensure the pump operates freely.

Take out the oil pan and, after that, the pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt will have to be removed in order to remove the pump together with the extension shaft from the engine. In order to mount the pump, it has to be placed and oriented with the top end of the hexagonal extension shaft in line with the hexagonal socket in the bottom of the distributor drive gear since the distributor drives the oil pump. Then torque the oil pump-to-rear main bearing cap bolt to pitch before replacing the oil pan on the block.

The distributor drives the oil pump, so it is absolutely essential that the components mate properly.

Finally, reinstall the oil pan, add oil, run the engine, and check for leaks.

The oil pump clearance should be between 0.0025 to 0.0050 inches; if it exceeds 0.0050 inches, measure the gears and pocket to find the issue.

Clean all parts in solvent and dry them thoroughly, inspecting the body for cracks, wear, or other damage, as well as the gears.

Remove the cover assembly and slide out the oil pump gear.

Shut off the engine to inspect all work.

Secure the assembly with bolts and torque-tighten them to specifications.

Remove the cover assembly and slide out the oil pump gear.

Remove the oil pan.

Reinstall the oil pan.

The final step is to install the mounting bolts and nut, tightening them to the specified torque, and then reinstall the oil pan.
