    Q:
How to Replace Brake Pads and Service the Brake Calipers on Pontiac Grand Prix? Posted by Customer
    A:
Before starting with the brake work, with screw the master cylinder two-thirds empty of brake fluid, then unscrew the lug nuts of the wheel, lift the car safely on jack stands, and unbolt the wheel but unscrew two lug nuts to retain the disc. Remove dust from the caliper, disc and the parts by use of brake system cleaner and make sure you collect the droppings and avoid using compressed air. You will need a large C-clamp to compress the pistons back to their positions inside the caliper, while observing the fluid level in the master cylinder. Before removing the brake caliper, on 1996 and earlier models, the caliper mounting bolts must be taken off and the caliper lifted vertically without relying on the brake hose while on the 1997 and later models the lower caliper bolts are removed and the caliper swung upward. Take out the outer pad out of the caliper and retract the inner pad from the pistons. To install the piston back into the caliper bore it requires C-clamp and for new brake pads apply the anti squealing compound to the rubber surface at the back of the pads. A worn or cracked caliper mounting bolt boots should be replaced and to bring the process in putting the new pads back to where it started is the way to go, secure the anti-rattle clip if applicable. Place the caliper again onto the disc, apply the lubricant on the mounting bolts and tighten them to the recommended torque value. When the vehicle is lowered, add the correct concentration of the fluid into the reservoir, take several pumps of the brake pedal until the pads meet the discs before undertaking a gentle road check. For the rear also, remove the fluids, then loosen the lug nuts, and thereafter lift the car. Er, take the caliper out by the required bolts and cables, retract the piston, and replace the lever seal, and the lever. Align the inner pad to the piston and fit the outer pad and wrap around the disc with the help of four bolts and apply pressure to the brake pedal to push the pads into its place. Last but not the least, wipe the surrounding area of the lever seal, grease the same area and then fit the lever adjusting the parking brake cable and finally replacing the wheel and torquing the lugnuts.
