The Camshaft Position (CMP)Actuator System is an electro hydraulic system that controls the relative angle position of the camshaft to the crankshaft to use exhaust gases to mix a lean intake charge, increase engine torque range and also bring better fuel economy. This system includes the PCM, the solenoid of the CMP actuator, and the camshaft position actuator and the PCM controls the oil pressure to the CMP actuator and sends a pulse width modulated signal to it. The oil is channeled through two splines for increasing or decreasing the camshaft timing, while the CMP actuator is fitted at the front end of the part. The performance of the CMP Actuator System can be affected in a number of ways, for instance, aftermarket oil additives, wrong engine oil level/pressure/temperature, or viscosity. For component replacement, the CMP actuator magnet is located on the timing chain cover with the balancer at the front of the camshaft. For 6.0L models the water pump must first be pulled out then the entire cooling system has to be emptied, for other models the drive belt and Idler pulley should be detached. To remove the CMP actuator magnet; one has to first disconnect the electrical connector of the magnet, then, removing three of the mounting bolts will allow for the extraction of the magnet, the old gasket must be disposed of and the gasket surface(s) have to be cleaned. Removal of the following involves the vice versa: The mounting bolts must be tightened securely followed by the installation of a new gasket while the cooling system should be refilled for the 6.0L models.
