    Q:
How to remove and install Idler Arm and Pitman Arm on Cadillac Escalade? Posted by Customer
    A:
This information applies only to models with a recirculating-ball steering gear. The steering linkage connects the steering gear to the front wheels, consisting of the Pitman arm, idler arm, relay rod, two adjustable tie-rods, and sometimes a steering damper. The Pitman arm, attached to the steering gear shaft, moves the relay rod, which is supported by the idler arm. The relay rod's motion is transmitted to the steering knuckles through tie-rod assemblies. To inspect, unlock the steering wheel, raise the front of the vehicle securely with jackstands, and check for play in the relay rod and tie-rod. If play exceeds 0.039 inches, replace the assembly. Check the idler arm for play greater than 0.078 inches and inspect for torn boots or damaged components. For removal, detach the tie-rod ends from the steering knuckle arms, separate the relay rod from the Pitman and idler arms, and install new nuts during reassembly. When replacing the idler arm, ensure proper torque settings and do not reuse nuts. For the Pitman arm, mark alignment for reassembly, inspect threads and seals, and use a new nut during installation. Inspect the steering damper for fluid leakage and excessive wear, test for smooth resistance, and replace if necessary. Remove and install the damper following the reverse of the removal process.
